Biographies of Russian designers
History of Russian design. As a rule, bright experiments show outside the context of the realities of mass production.
This exhibition determines the paradigm of Russian design, tells real stories about how and why industrial products went out in a particular design, launched production or remained at the stage of projects. We found projects and works that have never been exhibited before in museums that have been stored in families and archives of the Soviet Research Institute for many years, we collected photo and video chronicles, created dozens of layouts never and have never implemented projects.
All these unique materials enter the dialogue paired with objects that are stamped at factories with millionth circulations, ”says Alexander Sankov, curator of the exhibition and director of the Moscow Design Museum. Coffee table, chair. DSP, wood array, upholstery. The meeting of the Moscow Museum of Design Curators Alexander Sankov and Olga Druzhinina draw parallels between promising developments of Soviet and Russian designers and mass production products.
At all times, designers sought to create an ideal subject environment for a person: beautiful, comfortable, safe. Often their dreams were broken about reality - the impossibility of realization. Almost all projects of constructivist artists have remained experiments. In years, the design of mass products was beyond the scope of grandiose plans and new styles; Theoretical and methodological breakthroughs of X, as a rule, are preserved only on paper.
Today, such projects are called conceptual: they do not imply immediate embodiment, but show possible solutions to the problems of the nearest and distant future, predict, and sometimes determine the development of project activities and technologies. For example, in the first part of the exposition dedicated to the avant -garde, a minimalistic kitchen for the house of the Narkomfin, one of the most famous monuments of constructivism, is contrasted with simple wooden stools.
The kitchen replica was created specifically for the exhibition and is shown for the first time. Sports costume, "protruding." Designer: V. Fabric, sewing. The meeting of the Moscow Design Museum in the post-war design section will see the 3D maks of the Squirrel Small Car, designed by V. Aryamov - he, as the Crocodile magazine wrote at that time, was tortured in the “Bureaucratic Wheel” and never began to release.
Instead of “squirrel”, “Zaporozhets” appeared on the streets. A set of chess and checkers "10,16". Designer: Timofei Zhuravlev. Manufacturer: "10.16". MDF, varnish. The designer’s property in the last section devoted to the present, curators show, not contrasting, two main directions in the actual Russian design - innovative projects and already successfully implemented.

Prototype the property of the designer "In the name of the exhibition - the word" favorites ". We chose exhibits that most clearly illustrate the most significant stages of development of Russian design, examples of “good design”, which were many among mass industrial production products.
In addition, we understand that within the framework of one exposition it is impossible to tell about all areas and directions of Russian design in more than a hundred years. Therefore, we show only a small but important part of his story and leave the opportunity, regularly changing the exhibits, to continue this conversation, ”says Olga Druzhinina, the curator of the exhibition.
