African pirate and cannibal, the opponent of the good hero - Dr. Aibolit. The history of the creation is the first illustrations for the tales of Korney Chukovsky about the villain Barmaley and the good Dr. Aibolite was drawn by the artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. Both, the author and illustrator, walked along Barmaleev Street in St. Petersburg. Dobuzhinsky became interested in the name and began to find out from the satellite who this Barmaley is, in whose honor they named the street.

Chukovsky nominated the version from where the name could come from, trying to lead the name of some Englishman Bromleya, probably served in the XVIII century at the court of the empress. Korney Chukovsky and Mstislav Dobuzhinsky Dobuzhinsky, however, this version seemed boring. The artist suggested that Barmaley is a terrible robber, and then in a sketchy he sketched the first sketch of a ferocious mustachioed pirate with a beard.

So, as a result of a playful discussion, the image of the African robber was born, which was actually invented by the artist Dobuzhinsky, and Chukovsky later did this a spontaneously arising character by the hero of fairy tales. This literary legend formed the basis of the “folk” etymology, which still attributes the name of the street invented by the Chukovsky Englishman Bromley.

The plot familiar to the audience in cartoons and illustrations of Barmaley appears to be a mustachioed villain, armed saber and a pistol, in a pirate suit, often striped, with a red scarf on his head. In the fairy tale “Barmaley”, two children, Tanya and Vanya, contrary to the parental ban, go for a walk to Africa and there fall into the clutches of the terrible robber Barmaley, who eats children.

The illustration of Mstislav Dobuzhinsky throws the robber into the fire trying to save the children of Aibolit, but the good doctor asks the crocodile to swallow Barmaleya. Having visited the reptile in the mouth, the hero was looking at, and when, at the request of Tanya and Vanya, the crocodile released him, he went to Leningrad at the same time, where he behaved decently and the pitch of gingerbread, which he handed out to the children.

In the fairy tale of the year, Dr. Aibolit, Barmaley again demonstrates a bad character. The hero takes prisoner of Dr. Aibolit when he comes to Africa to treat monkeys. The key to the dungeon where the doctor with satellites sit, Barmaley keeps with him. However, the parrot manages to steal the key from the robber and free the captives. Barmaley and Dr. Aibolit Barmaley's minions go in pursuit of a good doctor, but they fall from the bridge to the river and cannot catch the fugitives.

In the lands of Barmalei, the doctor and his companions fall on the way back. The robbers are trying to grab them, but as a result, the heroes take the ship from the robbers and return to it home. In the poetic fairy tale “We overcome Barmaley! From the robber and leader of the pirate gang of Barmaley in this fairy tale turns into a king of terrible wild animals. In the finale, he is shot from a machine gun, and poison is whipping from the body of the murdered villain.
