With the previous courage, he took an active part in the battles for Kyiv. Exclusively I. Kustov fought over the Dnieper, where he destroyed six enemy aircraft on the Yak-7B. Two of them are FW fighter and FW adjustor in one flight on November 6. It was on November 6, at his proposal that the noses of the squadron aircraft were painted red to the wing. He was buried in Kyiv at the Solomensky cemetery. By that time, the brave pilot had made near combat sorties, shot down 20 enemy aircraft personally and 12 in a group with comrades.
